The Year in Craft - 2022

As we approach the end of this busy year, we'd like to take an opportunity to look back on all the beautiful fiber creations that Tierra Wools and our fiber family have created over the past year. The act of making grounds us all and gives us a sense of purpose: we'd like to celebrate that impulse which we all share in this collection of creations made by Tierra Wools artisans and members of our fiber family throughout 2022. We hope you find this collection as inspiring as we do!

January

Molly wowed us with whimsical birds that look as though they could take flight at any moment in this charming tapestry weaving. And no amount of snow will stop our determined master dyers as they create batch after batch of vibrant colors for our winter weaving projects!

February

We’re always delighted when Kirsten pays us an extended visit from Norway to weave and volunteer at Tierra Wools. This year, she was hard at work developing her pictorial weaving skills - it’s looking really good!

March

Sophie shows off a new hemlock fir folding loom hand-built by Dave Barber in Chama, NM. We designed these looms with Dave as a more convenient home version of the large Rio Grande standing looms we use in our workshops. Dave is a wonderful craftsman and we’re delighted to be able to offer his looms for sale at Tierra Wools.

April

As Tierra Wools opened for the 2022 season, we welcomed students back to our in-person weaving courses. Molly tested out one of Dave Barber’s new folding looms and created this beautiful grayscale New Mexico landscape.

May

Our students were loving our spacious new weaving studios - even on days when it wasn’t warm enough to open the doors! At the ranch, all hands were busy welcoming the new lambs - and our future wool yarns - into the world!

June

Our master weavers were busy weaving vibrant rainbows as we prayed for rain this month. From left to right, rainbows by Molly are set against a natural gray background; Molly working on her rainbow weaving; a colorful rainbow runner by Lara.

July

We’re constantly impressed by the hard work and dedication shown by our weaving students - and the tapestry weaving class was all smiles in July as they worked on the designs they created as part of the course.

August

Bold geometric patterns were popular among Tierra Wools’ master weavers this summer, but there’s always room for a little bit of pictorial nature, too! From left to right, weavings by Cynthia, Charles, and Dayna.

September

As the summer fades here in northern New Mexico, Toni and her helpers finished gathering natural dyeing supplies for Tierra Wools to last us through the cold months. Toni was also hard at work over her dyeing kettles concocting new shades for Shepherd’s Lamb’s naturally-dyed yarn collection.

October

Molly finished a charming black and white pictorial weaving of a bear and our weaving students learned the finer points of finishing with Sophie.

November

Our last weaving classes of the 2022 season truly outdid themselves with an array of bold designs in fall-inspired colors. Bravo, ladies!

December

Darling Diné horses and a handsome ram - all handmade by Ray Growler in Sweetwater, New Mexico - arrived at the shop just in time for the holiday season!

Thanks for joining us on our fiber journey this year - we sincerely appreciate all the comments and photos you send to us throughout the year.  We wish all of you a happy New Year and can’t wait to create with you in 2023!
