As we approach the end of this busy year, we'd like to take an opportunity to look back on all the hard work our fiber family has put into crafting another year’s worth of beautiful wooly creations. The act of making grounds us all and gives us a sense of purpose: at Tierra Wools, we celebrate this impulse that we all share, from those who raise the sheep that give us wool to those who spin, dye, and weave that wool into unique works of art. We hope you find this look back at the work of 2023 as inspiring as we do!
January
Molly was making good progress on a new southwest landscape in muted neutral colors. And no amount of snow gets in the way of our feed truck delivering hay every morning to our flock – but it sure is chilly work!
February
While the shop in Chama was closed for the winger months, our weavers were hard at work designing a series of brand-new pillows, each with a unique design to add a little southwest style to any décor.
March
This month Toni was hard work at a custom 12-foot table runner with stunning results! Outstanding work, Toni!
April
As Tierra Wools opened for the 2023 season, we welcomed students back to our in-person weaving courses. Work in the dyeing studio got underway again as our master dyers began developing our 2023 collection of hand-dyed colors. At the ranch, it was all hands on deck for shearing time - our annual spring wool harvest.
May
At the ranch, all hands were busy welcoming the new lambs - and our future wool yarns - into the world! Fortunately the weather was mild this year and we all had the opportunity to enjoy the big, blue New Mexico sky.
June
Our weaving classes were in full swing this month and our students were all smiles at their work under the watchful eyes of our weaving instructors.
July
Our flock enjoyed the cooler temperatures of the high country during the summer months. Back at Tierra Wools, our natural dyeing class produced a beautiful range of sunny southwest colors.
August
Our students experienced all aspects of the weaving process, including the work of finishing – getting all the fringe tied and loose ends sewn in! Outside the shop, freshly-dyed Tierra Wools yarn hung on a gate in the late summer sun.
September
The jewel tones of Tierra Wools’ fine apparel yarn – a delicious wool-mohair blend – arrived on our shelves just in time for the fall knitting season.
October
You could almost smell hints of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg in Tierra Wools’ latest collection of pumpkin spice-inspired hues. Our beginning weaving class was inspired by fiery hues of the autumn leaves to create a collection of bold, richly colored weavings.
November
This month we welcomed the fiber arts of Kathy Kiraly and Laurie McIntyre to our online store just in time to add a little whimsy to our holiday craft collection.
December
A rainbow of all-natural hues mixed from the natural fibers of the Churro sheep raised by Shepherd’s Lamb arrived in our weaving studio. The snow had already begun to fly on the ranch and the work of winter feeding had begun.
Thanks for joining us on our fiber journey this year. We wish all of you a happy New Year and can’t wait to create with you in 2024!
